Samuel H. Scudder was an American entomologist and paleontologist.

Scudder specialized in the study of Orthoptera, which at that time was defined to include grasshoppers, crickets, cockroaches and other insects. He also did extensive work on the classification of Lepidoptera and Coleoptera (beetles), and was a pioneer in the study of fossil terrestrial arthropods, including fossil insects. Among other affiliations, Scudder was successively curator, librarian, custodian and president of the Boston Society of Natural History (1859-1870, 1880-1887).

William Whitman Bailey was an American botanist and chemist.

Prevented by health problems from pursuing field research, Bailey taught botany for nearly thirty years at Brown University, which eventually awarded him a professorship and a master's degree. Bailey's course, begun as a private offering in 1877, was the first time the subject was taught at Brown.
