Philadelphian poet, playwright and diplomat. Trained as a lawyer, Boker gave up a law career to pursue his love of poetry and published his first volume of verse in 1848. Boker's next several works were plays, including Francesca da Rimini, the one he is most well-remembered for, published in 1853. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Boker took up the Union cause with his pen, became a staunch Republican and became involved with the Union League of Philadelphia. President Ulysses S. Grant appointed him U.S. Minister to Turkey in 1871. He later became U.S. Minister to Russia in 1875.

Pennsylvania-born author George Henry Boker was primarily known for poetry and drama. He generally wrote in traditional forms, using classical themes, and had a penchant for verse drama. Gradually, political views became prominent in his work, and he eventually served as Minister to Turkey and then Russia.

George Henry Boker was playwright, poet, patriot and diplomat. He graduated from the COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY (now Princeton University) in 1842. He was the founder and the first editor of the NASSAU MONTHLY. He published two volumes of poetry, wrote a number of plays, and served as United States Minister to Turkey and Russia. His most successful play was the verse tragedy FRANCESCA DA RIMINI.
