Laurence Binyon was a British poet and art historian who had a long and influential career with the British Museum. Born in Lancaster, Binyon started publishing poetry at the age of sixteen, and won scholarships allowing him to graduate from Oxford. In 1893 he began his long association with the British Museum, mainly in the department of prints and drawings. Binyon published poetry and verse drama throughout his life, as well as writing important works in art history. He helped popularize eastern art in England through his writing and work with the Museum, and is probably best remembered for the prescient World War I ode, For the Fallen.
