Rear Admiral Winfield Schley was born in 1839 and died in 1911. Highlights of his naval career included blockading squadron during the Civil War, the rescue of Greeley in the Arctic in 1884 and the destruction of Admiral Cervera's fleet during the Spanish American War at the Battle of Santiago Bay.

Winifield S. Schley rescued LT. Adolphus W. Greely and his party in the Arctic in 1884. He was in command of the United States fleet that destroyed the Spanish fleet as it tried to escape from Cuba on July 3, 1898. He was born in Frederick County, MD, on October 9, 1839, and died in New York, NY, on October 2, 1911.

Winfield Scott Schley, Naval Officer, was born in 1839 and died in 1911. He was involved in the Battle of Santiago Bay during the Spanish-American War where the Spanish Navy was defeated. His superior, RADM William T. Sampson, was absent and a controversy ensued about who should be credited with the victory.
