Papers of Gertrude Besse King, 1915-1942.

Collection consists of a bound volume of typescript poems entitled Complete Poems (some are dated 1915); To My Dreams (privately published in 1926, some of which are included in Complete Poems); a draft of King's biography prepared by her sister, Florence Besse Ballantine for the Radcliffe College Alumnae Association, 1942; typed transcripts of letters from King to Sally Robinson, 1921-1923; other typed poems (copied, 1926), etc.

Interior designer and environmentalist, Mary Brewster Kennedy grew up in Longmeadow, Massachusetts, the daughter of Florence Besse and Kingman Brewster, Sr. Her brother was Kingman Brewster, Jr., president of Yale University. Gertrude Besse King attended Vassar College (AB 1903) and Radcliffe College (AM 1909). In 1906 she married Stanley King (1883-1951) who later became president of Amherst College; they had three biological children and adopted two others. They lived abroad, mostly in Eastern Europe, 1914-1916.
