Interior designer and environmentalist, Mary Brewster Kennedy grew up in Longmeadow, Massachusetts, the daughter of Florence Besse and Kingman Brewster, Sr. Her brother was Kingman Brewster, Jr., president of Yale University. She graduated from Smith College (1936) and studied at the University of Chicago where she met her first husband, Carvel E. Collins. She later married architect Robert Woods Kennedy. An active member of the Cambridge Plant and Garden Club (Massachusetts), she served as Cambridge's Conservation Commissioner and was instrumental in restoring the Fresh Pond Reservation. Kennedy died in Cambridge in 2011 at age 77.
