Apologizing for not writing sooner to acknowledge receipt of Gillies's verses, explaining that "my present situation is very hurried" and referring to his recent purchase of Abbotsford; praising Gillies's verses and encouraging him to remain active in his literary pursuits as "we must labour or die of ennui."
