Abraham Maricle diary, 1866-1868.

This collection contains a typed transcription of a diary (October 1866-May 1868) of Abraham Maricle including a description of his journey from St. Cloud, Minnesota, to Helena, Montana Territory, with the Peter B. Davy wagon train; a translation of a German diary (June 1867-January 1868) by Henry Lueg describing the same journey; photocopies of two letters (1867, 1868) with transcripts, to Maricle; and a copy of a receipt (1868) from N.P. Langford that was found in Maricle's diary. Also included is a list of the people who arrived in Helena on the Davy train. (SC 1722)

Henry Lueg emigrated from Germany in 1861. He served with 21st New York Reigiment of volunteers and he was honorably discharged after serving two years in the civil war. He lived in Cincinnati, St. Louis and Nashville before settling in St. Paul. From St. Paul, he joined the Davy Emigration party, which made the journey to Portland, Oregon. Abraham Maricle was born in Binghamton, New York, in 1826. He enlisted as a private in the Minnesota 1st Sharpshooters in 1861 and in 1863 Company A of the 1st Minnesota Battalion. He mustered out July 14, 1865. For the next two years he worked in the Elk River, Minnesota, area cutting wood. In the summer of 1867 he joined Peter B. Davy's wagon train in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
