This collection consists of personal and literary papers of Louisiana physician and folklorist, Hewitt L. Ballowe. Included are handwritten and typed correspondence, financial documents, invitations, official and honorary certificates, maps, genealogical information and papers pertaining to the Groleau family, a photograph, a scrapbook, newspaper clippings, and literary manuscripts. Correspondents include Dr. Rudolph Matas, M. M. Wilkerson and Guy Lyle.

Rudolph Matas was a prominent New Orleans, La., surgeon. During his career, he served as director of the NEW ORLEANS MEDICAL AND SURGICAL JOURNAL and Professor of Surgery at Tulane University, a post he held until he became Emeritus Professor in 1927. He also was a surgeon and consultant at Charity Hospital, Touro Infirmary, and the Ear, Eye, Nose and Throat Hospital of New Orleans. Hewitt Leonard Ballowe was a physician and folklorist from Buras and Diamond, Louisiana. He is best remembered for the works: Creole folklore tales; and, The Land sayin' the same. Dr. H. L.
