Pleasant Williams Kittrell (1805-1867) was born in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. After graduating from the University of North Carolina in 1822, he studied at the medical college of the University of Pennsylvania, but returned to North Carolina to practice medicine before graduation. Kittrell moved to Alabama in 1837, where he was elected to the state legislature three times. Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) served as General of the Confederate Army in the U.S. Civil War and was president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia from 1865 to 1870. Lee spent the first twenty-three years of his military career in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
