Pleasant Williams Kittrell (1805-1867) was born in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. After graduating from the University of North Carolina in 1822, he studied at the medical college of the University of Pennsylvania, but returned to North Carolina to practice medicine before graduation. Kittrell moved to Alabama in 1837, where he was elected to the state legislature three times. In 1847, he married Mary Frances Goree and moved his family to Madison County, Texas, and later to Huntsville, Texas. Twice elected to the Texas legislature, Kittrell served as chairman of the Education Committee and introduced a bill to establish the University of Texas. In 1866, he was appointed chairman of the university’s board of administrators.
