John A. Washington and Eleanor L. S. Washington correspondence, 1842-1860 [microform].

Consists of a group of 173 manuscript letters exchanged between John Augustine Washington, Jr. and Eleanor Love Selden during the period of their engagement and marriage, 1842-1860. The very personal letters present a portrait of Virginia plantation life in the decades leading up to the Civil War, containing much family information, important information about the management of the Mount Vernon estate, the condition of the Mansion, and the beginning of boat travel to Mount Vernon. John A. Washington had to travel frequently in order to maintain business connections for their agricultural enterprises, taking him as far as Chicago, whence he wrote descriptive letters in 1859 and 1860.

John Augustine Washington III was the great-grand nephew of George Washington and the last private owner of Mount Vernon. He was born on May 3, 1821 to John Augustine Washington II and Jane Charlotte Blackburn Washington. His young childhood was spent at Blakeley Plantation near Charles Town, WV. After the death of Bushrod Washington and his wife, the family moved to Mount Vernon.
