Forty-four letters, most ALS, including some fragments, most written by Albert Allmand, d. 1857, 1847-1856 and undated, and by William Harrison Allmand, 1847-1857 and undated, to their mother, Mrs. George Blow, and brothers and sisters; and by Albert Allmand, possibly the father of Albert and William Harrison, most to his wife, Margaret Allmand, 1826-1828. Most letters by the younger Albert Allmand were written during his service on the Saratoga in China and as part of Perry's expedition, 1850-1854. Several letters discuss participation in the expedition by the Saratoga, reception of the expedition in Japan, and Allmand's impressions of Japan and Japanese officials. One letter was written during the return of Perry's second expedition to the United States in 1854. Other letters discuss Allmand's experiences in Hong Kong, Macao, Shanghai, and other ports; his opinions about the Navy and prolongation of his service in China; and news of events in China, such as piracy and rebellion. A few letters, 1856 and undated, were written after his return to the United States from Asia. Two earlier letters, dated on the Cyane during the Mexican War, 1847-1848, discuss his experiences in the naval blockade and California campaign. Also present are an ALS to J. O. G. Allmand, a brother of Albert, from an unidentified navy official, 1888, regarding Albert's salary and status as a midshipman during the Mexican War; and copies, made in 1886, of two orders issued to Albert Allmand, 1845 and 1848. Letters written by William Harrison Allmand, 1847-1848, concern his work as Perry's secretary during the Mexican War, his experiences during the occupation of Vera Cruz, and other news of the War. Later letters concern his travels in England, dated on board the ship Arctic, 1851-1853; news of the yellow fever epidemic in Norfolk, 1855; and the death and funeral of his brother Albert, 1857. Also present is a poem, manuscript, written for William Harrison Allmand by Robert T. Maccoun, concerning their friendship, 1855. Letters written by the elder Albert Allmand to Margaret Allmand, his wife, dated at Philadelphia and Richmond, 1827-1828, concern his travels and health. Also present are a copy of a letter from Allmand, written in manuscript in an unidentified hand, to his brother Henry, giving advice about Henry's education, 1826; and a brief ALS to Allmand from A. Pomar, 1824.

The U.S.S. Cyane was launched December 2, 1837. During the Mexican-American War she carried John C. Fremont's California Battalion to San Diego, La Paz, and Mazatlan before returning to Norfolk in 1848. The Cyane was decommissioned in 1871.
