The Allmand family lived in Norfolk, Virginia. Albert Allmand, d. 1857, graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1847, after serving as a midshipman on the ship Cyane during the Mexican War. During 1852-1853, he served on the ship Saratoga during Matthew Calbraith Perry's expedition to Japan. William Harrison Allmand, a brother of Albert, served as Perry's secretary on the ship Cumberland during the Mexican War.
