Scrapbook containing original and photostatic copies of letters relating to the Senate investigation of Harris Hoyt, Senator William Sprague of Rhode Island, and others following allegations that they were involved in the "Texas adventure" of trafficking in cotton with Texas Confederates during the Civil War. Laid in the volume are two original letters dated Oct 12 and 17, 1870 from Caleb N. Blood, U. S. government agent and detective at Matamoros, Mexico during the Civil War, to Captain B. F. Grafton, Washington, D. C., regarding his knowledge of Harris Hoyt's activities at Matamoros in 1862 and 1863. Photostatic copies of letters dating from September 11, 1862 to July 13, 1863, are pasted in the scrapbook and include a letter of recommendation for Hoyt written by John Hay, President Lincoln's private secretary, to the Secretary of War (Sep 11, 1862); letters written by Hoyt and Sprague to government officials and to business associates H. B. Brastow and Charles L. Prescott; and letters written by Brastow to William H. Reynolds. Accompanied by a publication of the 41st Congress, 3rd Session, Senate Ex. Doc. No. 10, Pt. 3: Letter of the Secretary of War [William W. Belknap] communicating . . . additional information in relation to the traffic with rebels during the war alleged to have been entered into on the part of Hoyt, Sprague, and others.
