The journal describes the voyage of the ship Relief from Norfolk to Porto Praya, Rio de Janeiro, Tierra del Fuego, Valparaiso, and Callao, and continues with the Vincennes's voyage to the Coral Islands, Tahiti, New South Wales, and Antarctica. There are daily reckonings and meteorological observations for 1838-1839.
