Joseph A. Underwood, midshipman in the United States Navy, served on the store ship Relief as lieutenant on the Wilkes Exploring Expedition. From 1839-1840, he served on the U.S.S. Vincennes, until he was murdered by the natives at Malolo, Fiji Islands.
