Collection, 1831-1891, of Peter Crebassa, a fur trader and agent for the American Fur Company at Mackinac, Michigan. Includes personal and business correspondence to and from Peter Crebassa, as well as on his behalf. Also includes statements of accounts, contracts, court cases and photographs of Crebassa and his family. These records relate to Crebassa's involvement with the fur companies, the Chippewa Indians, the Catholic Missions and the federal government and offers a unique view of the relationships between these institutions as well as demonstrating the significance of the fur trade to the early settlement of Michigan's Upper Peninsula and the Great Lakes Region.

Frederic Baraga was born on June 29, 1797 in a Slovene province of Dobrinic, Carniola, later known as Slovenia. After receiving his preparatory education in Ljubljana, where his talent for languages was marked, he studied law at the University of Vienna. Part Indian, part French, Crebassa was born in 1807 in the Red River County [Riviere Rouge] in Canada. He became the agent of the American Fur Company at Mackinac. In this capacity, he traveled the Lake Superior region until he married Nancy Roussain in 1837 at La Pointe.
