Horticulture in Vermont scrapbook, 1942-1944.

This scrapbook was compiled by the Federated Garden Clubs of Vermont between 1942 and 1944 as part of an effort to begin documenting Vermont's contribution to horticulture. It was intended as a beginning only and not an attempt at completeness. Some highlights of the scrapbook include articles about the Vermont Horticultural Society and the Federated Garden Clubs of Vermont. Flora and geologic features of Vermont, Vermont's cool climate, apples, maple sugaring and the Long Trail are also topics of interest. Biographical sketches of Vermont horticulturists, Charles H. Blasberg, Frederick Horsford, E. (Erastus) H. Hallett, Thaddeus L. Kinney, George McMillan Darrow, and William H. Darrow, are also included. Additionally, there also pieces about the work of Peter Kalm, the first botanist to study flora of the Champlain Valley and a student of Linnaeus, who was sent by the Royal Academy of Sweden in 1748. There are also several articles by either Ezra Brainerd or his daughter, Viola Brainerd Baird. Wild flowers, several varieties of domestic flowers, shrubs, and trees are all discussed in various pieces within the scrapbook. One piece was written by U.S. Senator, George D. Aiken; another describes state laws about the sale and protection of rare plants. The full Table of Contents of the scrapbook, listing the titles and authors of all articles, is available as an electronic document.
