L.A. Romanet (1880-1964) came to Canada from France in 1903. He joined the French fur trading company, Revillon FreĢ€res, and worked at the Ungava trading post in Quebec. In 1916 Romanet joint the Hudson's Bay Company as an inspector. By 1923, he had become district manager of the Athabasca and Mackenzie River Districts and general manager of the Alberta and Arctic Transportation Company. A tugboat captain for 30 years who pioneered transportation on Alberta's northern waterways. Born in Fort Simpson, N.W.T., he received his first shipboard experience under his father, who was a famous captain for the Hudson's Bay Company. After World War I, he worked for the Company, first as an engineer, then as a captain. Later he worked for the Northern Transportation Company.
