Johnson analyzes the results of the 1952 U. S. presidential election: "Hero worship did it. Stevenson got 2 1/2 milion more votes than Truman in 1948. That means that he kept all the Democrats and won 2 1/2 million independents. But 7 million people who never voted before...came swarming out to vote for Ike.....They didn't vote on the issues. They voted for Casablanca and the Normandy beaches. My only hope is that they haven't voted for Ike and got Nixon."
