Papers of Mann and his son William Mann Hodges [manuscript] 1856-1953.

Mann's legal and business correspondence constitute the greatest part of the collection. Other papers cover his service as judge of the Nottoway County, Va. Court, his campaign and term as Virginia governor, 1910-1914, his temperance and church activities is also present. The papers of his son are from his law partnership and his campaigns and terms as city councilman and mayor of Petersburg, Va. In the business and legal correspondence are papers from lumbering and mining operations in Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee, in which Mann had an interest including the Virginia and West Virginia Timber and Mineral Land Association, the Virginia Jellico Coal Co., the Loprice Land Co., the Wilson Berger Coal Co. & the Mary Helen Coal Corp. This section also contains bills, receipts and a fee book, and litigation papers over property, estates, bankruptcy, and collections. A considerable acount was generated by his service as attorney for the Norfolk & Western Railway and by the Virginia Railway & Power Co.'s absorption of the Richmond Passenger & Power Co. Among the political papers are correspondence from his unsuccessful attempt to be appointed to the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals; speeches, clippings and correspondence from his gubernatorial campaign; routine gubernatorial business involving patronage, invitations & charitable appeals; and articles of incorporation for various companies. Family papers contain student law notes; bills, receipts, deeds, a 1917 diary, and court cases in which the Manns were involved as well as correspondence. Topics in William Mann Jr.'s mayoral papers, 1946-1947, include amusement taxes, an annexation suit, a hospital building campaign, and municipal services, especially water, sewerage, and transportation. Of interest is a record of sugar rationing in Petersburg in W.W.I. Among the correspondents are Harry Flood Byrd, Richard Evelyn Byrd, John Alden Dix, Harry Delaware Flood, James Hay, Thomas Staples Martin, Bland Massie, S. T. Montague, Charles Lathrop Pack, Edward Watts Saunders, Claude Augustus Swanson, and Walter Allen Watson.
