Collection of miscellaneous southern historical papers [manuscript], 1778-1864.

The papers contain accounts, 1778-1810, of Colonel William Augustine Washington, for hardware, shoes for family members and slaves, carriage repairs, stationary items, postage, and dry goods; a custom bond, 1789, for the schooner Betsy and Nancy, issued by the Naval Office of South Potomack; and a letter, 1783, of Arthur Lee, Annapolis, to Thomas Fitzsimmons, requesting settlement of an account. There are also letters and memoranda, 1823-1840, relating to the construction of government buildings in Washington, D.C., in particular, the Treasury building and the Post Office; and a plat, ca 1835, showing Pennsylvania and Sixth Streets in Washington, D.C. There are also Civil War letters, 1862-1864, pertaining to solider life, the U.S. Army, and railroads in Virginia during the Civil War.

Author and naval officer. A close friend of Washington Irving, Paulding collaborated with him to produce the satirical periodical, Salmagundi. John Forsyth (1780-1841) was born in Fredericksburg, Virginia, on October 22. He graduated from Princeton in 1799 and was admitted to the bar in 1802.
