Stephen A. Freeman was born in Cambridge, Mass. He served as a naval aviator during World War I, graduated from Harvard in 1920 and received his Ph. D. there in 1923. He was appointed professor of French and dean of the French School at Middlebury College in 1925, serving on the faculty and in various administrative positions until his retirement in 1973.
