Freeman, Stephen Albert, 1898-1999
Variant namesStephen A. Freeman was born in Cambridge, Mass. He served as a naval aviator during World War I, graduated from Harvard in 1920 and received his Ph. D. there in 1923. He was appointed professor of French and dean of the French School at Middlebury College in 1925, serving on the faculty and in various administrative positions until his retirement in 1973. He was also active in community affairs, serving on many boards and committees and as moderator of Mary Hogan Elementary School and the Congregational Church of Middlebury. He was keenly interested in the history of Middlebury and Middlebury College. He and his wife, Ruth Hayden Freeman had three children.
