The Newberry was founded on July 1, 1887 and opened for business on September 6 of that year. The Newberry’s establishment came about because of a contingent provision in the will of Chicago businessman Walter L. Chicago historian and librarian. McIlvaine was a staff member at the Newberry Library in Chicago, and later was a librarian at the Chicago Historical Society. She was particularly interested in a study of old Chicago streets and landmarks, and lectured and published newspaper articles on the subject in the years 1927-1933.
