J.K. Paulding letters, 1839-1856

The collection contains four letters. Paulding writes to Sir (Capt. A.A. Nicholson), 30 Apr. 1839, returning his letter and explaining the correct way to communicate; to Dear Madam (Dolley Madison), 4 Jan. 1844, asking her to release some "papers" in her possession to be included in the volume of her husband's (President James Madison) letters soon to be published; to Gentlemen (Carey & Hart, publishers), 19 May 1846, accepting their offer to publish his manuscript, discussing actors, publishers, and work he is planning; to Sir (E. Borrows), 20 June 1856, about his memories of Robert Sands (writer, editor, 1799-1832) and Mr. Eastburn (clergyman, poet, 1797-1819), co-authors of Yamoyden (1820). Three of the letters have integral envelopes.

Author and naval officer. A close friend of Washington Irving, Paulding collaborated with him to produce the satirical periodical, Salmagundi. He also wrote poetry, fiction, and a popular biography of George Washington. President Martin Van Buren appointed Paulding Secretary of the Navy in 1839, in which post he served until 1841.
