Pennington Family Papers, 1828-1837.

The papers consist of the correspondence of James Adolphus Pennington (b. 1814), as well as the letters of his sister, Frances Amelia Pennington (b. 1822), dating from 1829 to 1837. The correspondence of James Adolphus Pennington includes two letters, one of which is addressed to his aunt, Charlotte Pennington; the other letter is addressed to his sister, Phebe Louisa Pennington (b. 1817). The remainder of the collection consists of Frances Amelia Pennington's correspondence to her sister, Phebe Louisa Pennington. Also included in the papers are transcriptions and copies of the original letters.

The Pennington Family of New Jersey is descended from Ephraim Pennington, one of the first settlers of Newark, New Jersey, whose father, also Ephraim Pennington, immigrated to New Haven, Connecticut around 1643. James Adolphus Pennington (1814 - 1858) was the second son of James Wheeler Pennington and Lucretia Shoulders Pennington, and the grandson of William Sanford Pennington, who was Governor of New Jersey from 1813 to 1814.
