The Pennington Family of New Jersey is descended from Ephraim Pennington, one of the first settlers of Newark, New Jersey, whose father, also Ephraim Pennington, immigrated to New Haven, Connecticut around 1643. James Adolphus Pennington (1814 - 1858) was the second son of James Wheeler Pennington and Lucretia Shoulders Pennington, and the grandson of William Sanford Pennington, who was Governor of New Jersey from 1813 to 1814. Frances Amelia Pennington (b. 1822) was the youngest child of James Wheeler Pennington and Lucretia Shoulders Pennington. She later married a member of the Carter family, of Newark, New Jersey. Phebe Louisa Pennington (b. 1817) was the oldest of the surviving daughters of James Wheeler Pennington and Lucretia Shoulders Pennington. She married Aaron Young, a native of Newark, New Jersey, around 1837.
