Letters mostly from Democratic Party members, but a few family letters, 1830's. Issues covered include the Mexican War, railroad legislation, the state bank of Illinois; the Kansas-Nebraska Bill; the Lecompton constitution; and the proposed revision of the Illinois constitution. They discuss campaigns and elections especially the 1850's with the 1855 senatorial contest of James Shields, Joel Matteson, Lyman Trumbull and Abraham Lincoln receiving considerable attention. Letters from Stephen A. Douglas (27) frequently include confidential information. U.S. Congressman Thomas L. Harris' letters (59) kept Lanphier apprised of activities in Washington until Shield's death in 1858 then letters from John A. McClernand, Anthony L. Knapp and William Ralls Morrison informed him. Letters from David L. Gregg (10), consul to the Sandwich Islands and advisor to King Kamehameha IV portray his life in Honolulu and duties at the court of the King. The writers include William Bissell, John C. Breckenridge, Sidney Breese, Thomas Campbell, Orlando Ficklin, Augustus French, Ebenezer Peck, John Reynolds, Alexander Starne, Lyman Trumbull, Richard Yates and many more. Includes manuscript copy of "Glory to God and the Sucker Democracy" a privately published compilation, by Charles C. Patton, of Lanphier's letters.
