The American art historian Julius Samuel Held (1905-2002) was renowned for his scholarship in 16th- and 17th-century Dutch and Flemish art, and an authority on the works of Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, and Rembrandt. Fritz Kredel was a renowned and versatile illustrator and artist. He found early success in Germany, culminating in a Gold medal for Book Illustration at the 1937 Paris World Exposition. His success continued in the United States, where he illustrated a book written by Eleanor Roosevelt, and later was commissioned to design a woodcut of the Presidential Seal for John F. Hermann Zapf was a master of type design, book design, and calligraphy. Born in Nuremberg in 1918, he began working in publishing as a photo-retoucher, and was inspired to be a letter-designer by an exhibition of Rudolph Koch's works.
