The Diria words, although not attributed, appear to be mostly transcribed from the vocabulary listed as Chorotegan or Dirian in E. G. Squier's book Nicaragua, its people, scenery, monuments, and proposed interoceanic canal (New York: D. Appleton & Co., 1852; 2 vols.), including entries selected from and following the order of Squier's main comparative table of languages in Nicaragua (vol. 2, p. 320-323) and the numbers 1 to 4, from a smaller table (vol. 2, p. 314).

Dr. Daniel Garrison Brinton (13 May 1837-31 July 1899) was born in Thornbury Township, Chester County, Pa., on "Homestead Farm" to Lewis and Ann (Garrison) Brinton. Brinton entered the army as a surgeon and served as Medical Director of the II Army Corps, holding the rank of Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel.
