In the 1970s the nurses at Burlington Medical Center were represented by the Iowa Nurses Association. Sometime in the 1980s the 180 nurses affiliated with the Communications Workers of America and became part of Local 7181. In August 1989 the nurses struck for more time off, better pay, health insurance, and on-call work conditions. This is thought to be the first nursing strike against an Iowa hospital.
