Luther was the cashier of the People's Savings Bank (Grand Rapids), and the National Bank Examiner. Belknap was born Oct. 17, 1846 in N.Y. (Sate). His family moved to Grand Rapids in 1854. He served in Company H, 1st Michigan Infantry during the Civil War, rising to the rank of Capt. and Bvt Lt. Col. In 1866, he married Chloe M. Caswell, with whom he had three daughters.
