Luther was the cashier of the People's Savings Bank (Grand Rapids), and the National Bank Examiner. Belknap was born Oct. 17, 1846 in N.Y. (Sate). His family moved to Grand Rapids in 1854. He served in Company H, 1st Michigan Infantry during the Civil War, rising to the rank of Capt. and Bvt Lt. Col. In 1866, he married Chloe M. Caswell, with whom he had three daughters. Luther founded Belknap Wagon & Sleigh Company in Grand Rapids in 1871. Belknap served as Mayor of Grand Rapids, 1884, a member of Congress, 1888-1892, Boy Scouts Commissioner (1920- ), and wrote several books about Grand Rapids and his war experiences. He died on Jan. 16, 1929. The Clarke Historical Library has several of Belknap's books. Muir was born in Jan. 26, 1830 in Scotland and migrated to Grand Rapids in 1851. He married Jean Davidson in 1853, with whom he had seven children. He was a shipbuilder, chief engineer, captain of the Barrett (Steamer), Third Ward alderman, and council president.
