Sherman was born in 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, near the banks of the Hocking River. His father, Charles Robert Sherman, a successful lawyer who sat on the Ohio Supreme Court, died unexpectedly in 1829. Horr served as a Major in the U.S. 13th Infantry during the Civil War. (His diary, 1862-1863, is at the Public Library of Des Moines.) Muhlenberg served as a Captain in Horr's unit and was also a Brvt. Maj. In the 1880s, he lived in Galesburg (Mich.) and was a member of the G.A.R. Orcutt Post No. 79 (Kalamazoo, Mich.).
