The Newberry was founded on July 1, 1887 and opened for business on September 6 of that year. Eugene Field, an American writer, was born in 1850 to Rosewell Field and Frances Reed. After his mother's death in 1856, he and his brother were sent to live with a cousin in Amherst, Massachusetts.
