The Newberry was founded on July 1, 1887 and opened for business on September 6 of that year. The Newberry’s establishment came about because of a contingent provision in the will of Chicago businessman Walter L. Chicago lawyer and congressman. John Valcoulon LeMoyne was born in 1828 in Washington, Penn., to Madeline Romaine Bureau LeMoyne and Francis Julius LeMoyne. His father, a well-known abolitionist, was a vice presidential candidate of the Liberty Party and later erected the first crematorium in the U.S. near Washington, Penn. Francis Julius LeMoyne, physician and abolitionist, was born on 4 Sept. 1798. He married Madeleine Romaine Bureau in 1823; they had eight children. LeMoyne died on 14 Oct. 1879. LeMoyne graduated from Washington College in 1815, studied medicine with his father, and then received an M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1823.
