The Ethel W. Squires Papers consist mainly of a five part autobiography written by Ethel in 1952 and 1953. The autobiography was written for her grandchildren. Some of Ethel's correspondence from 1968 to 1971, in which she reminiscences about early UND, is included as well.

The P.E.O. Sisterhood, a philanthropic educational society, was established on January 21, 1869 at Iowa Wesleyan University, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. Chapter D, the first of five Grand Forks, N.D. chapters of P.E.O., was established in 1913. Chapter D charter members included Ada Bek, Chrissie Budge, Lillian Budge, Mable French, Margaret Gillette, Eva Libby, Carrie Simpson, Leila Sturtevant and Gertrude Sturtevant. Ethel Claire Wood was born in Sandwich, Illinois, on March 27, 1882. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to Wahpeton, North Dakota. She graduated as valedictorian from Wahpeton High School in 1899. She next attended the University of North Dakota. Her first day at UND was her first day in Grand Forks.
