Tom C. and Fred R. Trelfa Collection, 1802-1971.

Collection, 1802-1971 and undated, of early, significant manuscripts relating to early fur trade and commerce at Michilimackinac and Sault Ste. Marie (Mich.), lighthouses, maritime activities on the Great Lakes. Manifests of lading and other records of American Fur Co. field agents document early fur trading and mining. Correspondence and other records between the U.S. Treasury Dept. and Collectors of Customs, usually Abraham Wendell at Michilimackinac, document marine hospital returns, registers of Great Lakes vessels, payment vouchers for Collectors, and construction bids for lighthouses at White Fish Point, Detour, and Copper Harbor, extensive information on Bois Blanc and Chicago River lighthouses regarding their operation and similar information for lighthouses at Pottawattomie, Thunder Bay Island, and Presque Isle. Alcona, Iosco, Presque Isle counties, Mackinac Island, and the centennial of Rogers City (Mich.) are also documented.

Abraham was born in Albany (NY) in 1791. He owned and operated a store on Mackinac Island (Mich.) where he served as Collector of Customs for the Great Lakes, ca. 1831-1848. He was married and had at least seven children. He died on Dec. 21, 1851 at age 60. His son, George T. was probably born in Albany (NY) in 1824. Like his father he was a merchant. Trelfa (1886-1929) was a historian from Alpena (Mich.). Several of his and his brother Tom's collections about early Michigan history are in the Clarke Historical Library.
