Commenting on her sister Anne's declining health and noting that Anne has many of the symptoms Emily Brontë had before she died; mentioning a trip to Scarborough she is planning at Anne's request; reporting on her father's health; expressing her hope that "Mr. Smith will not risk a cheap edition of 'Jane Eyre' yet"; explaining that she does not know when her next novel will be ready; warning him that even if her "path were quite smooth" she "could never march with the head of a Scott, a Bulwer, a Thackeray, or a Dickens"; directing him to tell Thackeray that the secret of Currer Bell's identity "will be well kept because it is not worth disclosure."
