Lutes (1872-1942) was a popular Michigan author of numerous articles, columns, and books. She was born in Jackson (Mich.) and attended Jackson High School. At age 16 she became a teacher in Jackson County and Detroit city schools. In 1907 she moved to Copperstown (NY) as editor of American Motherhood. Clark was the son of Julia and Edward J. Clark, editor and printer of Grand Rapids, and the grandson of Merrills H. Clark, owner of the Grand Rapids Democrat. He was also the grandson of E.R. Huntley, once one of the wealthiest people in Grand Rapids. Clark was a top ranking minstrel performer for 20 years before he retired.
