In 1699 an intoxicated Oweneco, the sachem of the Mohegan Indians, sold the Mohegan hunting grounds for a few shillings to Nathaniel Foot and a company of purchasers intending to establish Colchester, Conn. Considering the purchase illegal and unfair, Oweneco and his brother, Ben Uncas, complained in 1700 to the Connecticut General Court.
