Oweneco, d. 1715.

Hide Profile

In 1699 an intoxicated Oweneco, the sachem of the Mohegan Indians, sold the Mohegan hunting grounds for a few shillings to Nathaniel Foot and a company of purchasers intending to establish Colchester, Conn.

Considering the purchase illegal and unfair, Oweneco and his brother, Ben Uncas, complained in 1700 to the Connecticut General Court. Four years later a commission appointed by Queen Anne determined that this tract, among others, should be returned to the tribe.
