Congress passed a resolution creating a national weather service on February 9, 1870, and it was signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant. This new law directed the Secretary of War to take meterological observations and provide warnings of approaching storms. The Brevet Brigadier General Albert J. Butterfield, George Washington, 1843-1919

Butterfield was born on June 7, 1843 in Utica (Mich.). He enlisted in the Michigan Infantry, 22nd Regiment, Co. B in 1862, transferring a week later to the U.S. Signal Corps. After the war, he lived in Bay City (Mich.). He married twice, having a total of nine children. He died on Oct. 7, 1919 in Bay City (Mich.).
