Butterfield, George Washington, 1843-1919
Variant namesButterfield was born on June 7, 1843 in Utica (Mich.). He enlisted in the Michigan Infantry, 22nd Regiment, Co. B in 1862, transferring a week later to the U.S. Signal Corps. After the war, he lived in Bay City (Mich.). He married twice, having a total of nine children. He died on Oct. 7, 1919 in Bay City (Mich.). The Clarke Historical Library has publications of his Civil War correspondence and books written by his daughter, Olive, his grandson, Ira William, and his brother Ira Howard.
