Papers consist of personal and professional correspondence, legal documents, legal and household accounts, and other items. Family correspondence includes letters of Henry W. Conner, Jr. and Henry W. Conner, Sr. as well as Civil War correspondence of James Conner with his wife Sallie E. Conner. Professional correspondence includes letters written during James Conner's tenure as U.S. District Attorney for South Carolina (1858-1859), as South Carolina Attorney General (1877-1878), as solicitor for the South Carolina Railroad (1866-1880), and as receiver for the Greenville & Columbia Railroad (1869-1883), with related legal documents. Other professional correspondence pertains to various legal cases handled by James Conner including real estate transactions, debt collections, estate settlements, railroad cases, bankruptcies, divorces, insurance claims, and other cases, with related legal documents. Legal case papers, including accounts, notes, reports, letters, exhibits, bills of complaint, and other legal documents, pertain to various legal cases including that of Hamilton L. Shields v.R. Barnwell Rhett and Edward Lafitte, U.S. government claims against John Fraser & Co., Bank of Charleston cases, Emma A. Hilliard v. Mt. Pleasant Ferry Co. (a sequestration loss lawsuit), admiralty and estate cases, and many others. Four bound volumes (ca. 1853-ca. 1880) contain accounts for Conner's income and expenses for legal services; household receipts and accounts (1857-1882) are for food, clothing, furnishings, books, and other expenses. Other items include a legal form book (1843); a legal journal (1882); and a military epaulette.

A native of Charleston, S.C., James Conner was an attorney and a Confederate general. He served as U.S. District Attorney and S.C. Attorney General (1876), and became a member of the Confederate military court of the 2nd Corps in 1863. He was the son of Henry Workman Conner (1797-1861) and Julia Ann M. Courtney (1804-1881).
