Charleston, S.C. businessman. A native of Mecklenburg County, N.C., Conner, entered the mercantile business in Charleston as a young man and went on to become one of the leading financiers in the South. In 1835 he was a factor for the Bank of Charleston; he became its president in 1841, and in 1850 was also elected president of the South Carolina Railroad.

A native of Mecklenburg County, N.C., Conner entered the mercantile business in Charleston as a young man and went on to become one of the leading financiers of the South. In 1841 he became the president of the Bank of Charleston, and in 1850 was elected president of the South Carolina Railroad. From 1853 to about 1858 he lived in New Orleans, La. He was the son of James Conner (1751-1835) and Lilly Anna Wilson Conner (d. 1844), whose other children included Margaret J. Conner (she married Franklin Brevard). Henry W. Conner married Julia Ann M. Courtney in 1827, and their children included James Conner (1829-1883) and Henry W. Conner, Jr.
