Cornelius Kollock papers, 1845-1926; (bulk, 1853-1897).

Chiefly letters from Thomas M. Brewer, S.F. Baird, Francis Wayland (1796-1865), and Francis Wayland (1826-1904) re Kollock's accomplishments as a surgeon and naturalist, and celebration of the fortieth anniversary of the Brown University class of 1845; including letter, 20 Jan. 1857, from Francis Wayland, Providence, R.I., expressing pleasure upon learning there were South Carolinians willing to socialize with northerners "who had no affection" for slavery; letter, 18 May 1863, from T.P. Lide, Darlington, S.C., biographical information on Col. Abel Kolb and genealogical information on the Kolb family; and letter, 3 June 1885, from Francis Wayland, New Haven, Conn., forwarding a photograph and requesting a photograph from Kollock. Also includes volume, 1926, typed copy of biographical sketch originally published in The State under the title "Paladins of South Carolina" by James Henry Rice, Jr.; and copy of diploma, 3 Sept. 1845, from Brown University.

In 1917 the university established the Brown War Records Bureau, whose intention was to "collect and preserve a record of all Brown men who are serving in the present war". Brown faculty, students and alumni who were in the military were asked to fill out a small card called "Are you in the war?" and to send original letters, clippings or photographs which "have any bearing on the service of Brown men in the war."
