Frederic Baraga correspondence and related papers, undated and 1797, 1835-1868, 1972.

Copies and originals of correspondence and other papers relating to Frederic Baraga, Catholic priest and missionary, and a handwritten copy by an unknown author of Baraga's Ojibwa grammar (1871-1872). The correspondence consists of letters written by Baraga to his family and associates. Also included are genealogical data; a copy of Baraga's will; a brief excerpt from a baptismal record at the St. Joseph Mission, La Pointe, Wisconsin; and additional items relating to Baraga. Most of the items are in German or Latin and have not been translated.

Frederic Baraga was born on June 29, 1797 in a Slovene province of Dobrinic, Carniola, later known as Slovenia. After receiving his preparatory education in Ljubljana, where his talent for languages was marked, he studied law at the University of Vienna. Upon graduation in 1821 he broke his engagement to marry, renounced his inheritance, and entered Ljubljana's seminary. He was ordained September 21, 1823.
